Background: The Carolina Panthers are
one of the most successful expansion franchises
in NFL history. Within the first few years, the
Carolina Panthers were on the verge of a trip
to the Super Bowl. Finally the 2003 season would
be the most successful season in Carolina Panthers
history. The team would fight their way all the
way to the Super Bowl. Their opponent would be
the always tough New England Patriots. The Carolina
Panthers played their hearts out and barely lost
due to a last second field goal. The Panthers
rewarded quarterback Jake Delhomme for his Super
Bowl season June 17 by giving him a five-year,
$38 million contract extension that included a
$12 million signing bonus. Delhomme was entering
the final year of a two-year, $4 million contract.
He was scheduled to make a base salary of $1.37
million. This deal will keep him in Carolina until
2009.
