Background:
The proposed new stadium for the west side of
Manhattan -- to which the Jets are offering to
put up $800 million -- would bring the Jets back
to New York City, as well as a Super Bowl and
maybe even a college football bowl game. Recently
the Jets -- in conjunction with the Big East Conference,
the New York City Sports Commission, and the National
Football Foundation and College Football Hall
of Fame Inc. -- announced the creation of the
Big Apple Bowl, which is planned to begin in 2010.
"The Big Apple Bowl represents the type of
event that will generate significant revenue for
our City and bring thousands of new visitors to
enjoy all that New York has to offer," Jets
president Jay Cross said. The Jets are hoping
the new stadium will open in time for the 2009
season.
