Background:
Introductions are in order. Entering May mini-camps,
the Chargers have only 10 players on the roster
who have played more than two seasons with the
club, and they'll have to replace about 10 starters
from last season.
First-round draft pick Philip Rivers, acquired
in the Eli Manning trade with the Giants, figures
to push fourth-year quarterback Drew Brees to
improve dramatically, prepare for demotion or
find work elsewhere. Rivers was a four-year
starter at North Carolina State and might be
asked to transition into the nightmare Manning
sought to avoid -- becoming an instant starter
on a patchwork offense.
